50 year old patient survives bullet injuries in skull..

Apollo
NEW DELHI, MARCH 25: Doctors at a city official save 50 year old patient from a bullet which pierced through his skull. Doctors carried out a complicated and intensive procedure to treat extensive brain injury and repair the severely damaged skull cap. Kanpur based Hakim Singh is a preacher by profession who was injured during air-firing while preaching ‘Shri Madbhagwat katha’ at Jhansi. In a complex surgery that lasted five hours, doctors removed the bone pieces lying inside the brain and treated the cerebral contusions.

According to doctor, a gunshot injury to patient’s head had caused extensive brain injury. He was admitted to Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in national capital late in the evening of Sunday, the January 11 in a critical state. The bullet/pellet had entered the head through one side and exited through the other side. The CT scan of head revealed extensive brain injury with depressed fracture in frontal region as the bone was broken at multiple places. The damage to the brain was severe as the right frontal lobe had multiple pieces of bone lying inside it along with numerous cerebral contusions.

Senior Consultant, Neurology at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Dr Pranav Kumar, removed the bone pieces lying inside the brain and treated the cerebral contusions. Reapir of brain living membrane was carried out to repair dural tear.

“The patient had a long (about 13 mm) linear tear in the superior sagittal sinus which is the principal drainage channel of brain which caused heavy bleeding. The tear was repaired through surgery and four units of blood transfusion were given to the patient during and after the surgery to make up for the intense blood loss. A tracheostomy was also carried out to allow direct access to the breathing tube.” said Dr Kumar.

“We kept the patient under intensive care and on anticonvulsant and other supportive medications. After three weeks of therapy and treatment, the patient was discharged from the hospital. His speech is close to normal with normal cognitive abilities and movement.” added Dr Kumar.–

Does tight clothing enhance workouts?

fitnessIn recent years, many people who exercise have begun wearing compression clothes. These snug-fitting socks, shorts, tights or shirts, which squeeze muscles as tightly as sausage casings, are reputed to improve performance during exercise and speed recovery afterward.

But a new study and several reviews of relevant research raise interesting questions about whether the garments really function as expected and help people to exercise better and, if they do, whether it is the clothing or people’s expectations doing most of the work.

The rationales for wearing compression clothing are logical enough. “The garments supposedly increase blood circulation and thus oxygen delivery for improved sport performance,” said Abigail Stickford, a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, who led the new study of compression clothes.
