Tirthan-Valley-2014-29

If you want to get away from the urban madness for a vacation and the only problem is your budget then I have the perfect solution for you. And my experience as the travel show host will definitely come in handy.

In just Rs 3000 to survive for the next three days and three nights and this time I’m in the Kullu valley!!!

Nestled in the Himalayas in the heart of Himachal Pradesh is the ‘Valley of Gods’ or the Kullu valley. The best time to visit the area is between April and June and if you don’t mind the rains then you can trudge through the monsoons.

According to the ancient Hindu scriptures, Kullu was known as Kulantapitha or the end of the habitable world. Till the 17th century this region was only used as a stop on the crucial trade route between Central Asia and the Gangetic Plains down south.

Today the Kullu valley is on every travellers map and is also the gateway to Lahaul and Ladakh. My holiday will centre around Gushaini and Old Manali.

Gushaini is 40 kms before Kullu town and ideal for travellers looking for an offbeat holiday. The village, is scattered along the river Tirthan and getting there is no less than a gargantuan adventure.

You can get to the nearest town by bus but this time the journey takes on another turn. There are only three holiday homes in this tiny hamlet and it’s advisable to book your option before you get here.

With my meagre budget in hand, I decided to scout out at Raju’s cottage…a home-stay. Be prepared, the host definitely greets you in a rather unusual way—by waving at you from across the river.

Getting across the river is an experience and you need a heart of steel for that. These ropeways are essentially only one inch thick wires hanging across the roaring Tirthan river, so get comfortable because you will have to squeeze in.

There are many ropeways along the river, so be clear which one leads you to your destination before you get lost in the middle of a turbulent river.

The home-stay is spread across 22 acres of apple and apricot orchards. The place as the name suggests is run by Raju and his family. The rooms cost between Rs 1000-1200 and the rates are inclusive of unlimited food.

So I lounged in one of the only four guest rooms in the house. The rooms are simple, have a rustic feel and a beautiful view of the Himalayan range.

The property has nooks and corners that beckon you to sit back and relax. But if you are itching to to step out, the best way to start-off would be to get a lesson on fruit picking from your host.

The good thing about this place is that once you give Rs 1200 you can be carefree and chow down on the free and unlimited organic fruits. So I feasted on the nature’s bounty of apricot and apple juice till I could have no more.

While fresh fruits are a healthy option, what’s even better is the fresh catch of the day. So get yourself a fishing rod and have a go at the rushing waters.

The Kullu valley is a delight for those looking to spend hours star gazing or simply fishing along the Beas and Tirthan…
